Ottawa's Relief Maps have just celebrated the release of their album Graveyard Smash. After many listens I haven't quite pinpointed what I especially love about them. Let's just say there's a certain je ne sais quoi. The band's sound is well-balanced between lead keys and guitars with good ol' rock drums to bring it all together.
Simple songs, singable choruses, toe-tapping rock. Check out the title track "Graveyard Smash" and my favorite song that anyone can scream along to "Young Typist". There are obvious comparisons to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but sometimes it's nice to hear something familiar.
I was able to catch their release party and these guys put on a great show. In Ottawa, there is a lot of respect for what these guys produce, let's see what that translates into.
For shits, check out this Youtube clip of their singer and guitarist akwardly rock tambourines for The Walkmen!
