Gosh. It seems like just yesterday that I was enjoying the carefree melodies of Shout Out Louds’ debut effort Howl Howl Gaff Gaff. In reality, it was almost 4 years ago and the band has now returned with a sophomore album of impossibly catchy indie pop songs just waiting for you to whistle, hum and sing along to. Comparisons to fellow Swedes Peter Björn and John may be especially apt as Björn Yttling (the ‘Björn’ in Peter Björn and John) produced new album Our Ill Wills, SOLs band member Bebban Stenborg has been know to sing the female vocal part for Young Folks during live sets, and the two bands share a similar sound.
Take first single ‘Tonight I Have To Leave It’ for example. Listen to it twice and it’s in your head for the rest of the day. Excessive cowbell, happy catchy synth riffs, oodles of percussion and a hint of heartbreak – it’s as if Peter Björn and John’s little brothers all decided to start their own band, but ended up sounding like an even poppier version of their older siblings.
And that’s not a bad thing in any way.
Canadians can catch Shout Out Louds in Vancouver on October 12th, Toronto October 22nd and Montreal October 22rd.
