Friday Five

The Cribs - Cheat On Me

Here's the first single from Ignore the Ignorant, the upcoming Cribs album with new member, and Smiths legend, Johnny Marr. Between Modest Mouse and the Jarman bros, Marr is keeping very busy in '09. His impact is immediate, as riffs he and Ryan Jarman layer together sound as catchy as anything at the moment. Ryan's vocals sound like he just ingested drain cleaner, dude can belt it out. Last album Men's Needs... was produced by Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand and this one sees Nick Launay at the helm (YYYs, Arcade Fire, Talking Heads)... these guys keep some serious company and this album already sounds as good, if not better than the last.

Friendly Fires - Kiss of Life

Packaged with the deluxe version of their fantastic debut, "Kiss of Life" might be the best track yet. I caught them doing this song on Kimmel, very well may I add, though haven't decided on this official vid and the Elaine dancing:

Drake feat. Nipsey Hussle - Killers

Drizzy is no killer, though apparently he's been to the Amalfi Coast. Whoever Nipsey Hussle is sure likes rhyming "out" and "about." Keep 'em coming Jimmy.

Delphic - This Momentary

I didn't find out about this Manchester band until I'd left Manchester this summer. Their newest slow-burning electro single isn't as good as previously released "Counterpoint," but both are worth many listens. "Let's do something real..."

The Dutchess and the Duke - Hands

Excellent song from this duo's upcoming Sunset/Sunrise LP. Lovelorn, old-time western harmonies interrupted by some great guitar parts.

Franz Ferdinand Live @ The Internet

I think 'The Internet' would be a sweet club name... Just a quick note for fans of Franz Ferdinand all throughout the interweb, The Glasgow quartet will be performing in Hollywood on January 30th at 7:00 pm PST. Since science has really been letting me down lately, what with the lack of teleportation devices or affordable flying cars, the friendly people at Amoeba music will be streaming the performance live via web cast for Franz fans to enjoy near and far. You can go here for more info.

Remix Sunday: Christian Vorbau versus Franz Ferdinand

Cripes. Franz Ferdinand's much anticipated third album isn't even out yet (first single 'Ulysses' will be officially released tomorrow) but the obligatory remixes have already begun. Fortunately, this one is a solid effort. King Kong DJ Christian Vorbau stays fairly true to the original and adds some nice tweaks; the modified version features as the first track on Vorbau's December King Kong Mix, available in full here.

Scot Rocks

Why the hiatus, you ask? A couple of weekends ago I got out of London and embarked on an ambitious road trip around southern and central Scotland. Although I've been to Scotland (and Edinburgh) a few times already the scenery, people, and culture of this truly amazing country never cease to amaze me. And for a small place (under 80,000 square kilometres and just over 5 million people) it sure cranks out a ton of good music.
Here are some of the songs that made up my Scotland Summer Soundtrack while speeding through the idyllic countryside, drinking pints in village pubs, exploring abandoned castles and taking in the Edinburgh festival:

Mylo - Otto's Journey
Beta Band - Needles in My Eyes
Mogwai - Friend of the Night
Camera Obscura - Country Mile

Remix Sunday

Gosh. One of the best songs of 2007 and now one of the best covers of 2007 . . .
Franz Ferdinand has contributed a bang-up version of LCD Soundsystem's 'All My Friends', complete with a circa-1980s synth and Erol Alkan production.
This cover will be featured on LCD Soundsystem's upcoming All My Friends 7" single, out May 21st on DFA/EMI. Pick up a copy if you get a chance; it'll be a doozie.
