Remix Monday: The Chairs Cover EP

The Chairs were featured in this week's Friday Five and it's convenient that I mentioned their likeness to Neutral Milk Hotel since they have covered "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" for their cover EP. Their cover is pretty true to NMH style, growing into complete cacophonous discord.
The EP entitled Can We Be Friends also features covers of Bon Iver, Radiohead, Wilco, and Jump, Little Children. The EP is available for free download here and I recommend it since their take on these tracks are pretty unique. Highlights of the EP are Radiohead's "Motion Picture Soundtrack" which features a melodious accordian and Bon Iver's "Flume" with some beats and a piano.

Chiddy Bang

I’ve had a bit of a BTA hiatus this summer whilst working in the fjords of Norway. With an interweb connection that works depending on the weather in a house that pretty much used to be a brothel. So I’m going to try to make up for some lost time. Seems like I’m a little behind on this one, but I’m sure Chiddy Bang would have been part of my summer playlist if I had heard them earlier. Just when you thought you couldn’t stand to hear any more re-works of MGMT, these hip-hop hipsters from Philly drop a mixtape beat sampled from ‘Kids’ to get you bobbing. Lyrically, this track I find is hit and miss. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like the beat. I don’t know much about these guys but they seem to be making the rounds lately due to their new era indie rock sampling. Along with this track they also put their own spin on Passion Pit’s “Truth” and have taken a little something from the book of Radiohead in their live performances. These precision cut samples are largely credited to producer Xaphoon Jones, who along with working with the Chiddy Bang boys also dropped his own mixtape this summer. I’m looking forward to some more hipster beats from both these camps as well as seeing what else these guys have to offer besides chopping up indie favorites.

New Music Monday - Pattern is Movement

I have wanted to post about Pattern is Movement for a while now, and today is the time to drop some knowledge.

Pattern is Movement is Andrew Thiboldeaux and Chris Ward. At first glance, one may easily mistake the duo for a pair of truckers or movers in search for a good burger joint. They just look the part. Yet, this brawny, bearded, and balding duo shouldn't be judged by its appearance, but rather by the character of its music. And lucky for them, Pattern is Movement has created a brand of song that many are labeling as one of the most original sounds around the indie scene today.

With influences ranging from ?uestlove to Radiohead, the boys are responsible for some incredible tracks. My favourite is "Right Away", a song that is catchy and upbeat yet still haunting. Think Arcade Fire on this one.

For those of you in the Toronto or Montreal area, you can see the band this week at the Elmo on Nov 15 or Club Lambi on the 16th. Enjoy the tracks below, as well as this Take Away Show featuring the duo performing on a traffic median.

Remix Sunday: We Must Smoketh the Joint-th

How was everyone's Halloween? I hope it was filled with drunken debauchery and lots of stumbling. I gots a few remixes for you here; not really gonna write anything today, my mind is basically a bowl of brain soup. You may or may not enjoy these but trust me on the DFA mix of Paper Planes though, the music is hella tight... but it just doesn't fit quite perfectly with Mia's flow.

The Friday Five

I googled 'Friday 5' this morning and stole this photo from MuchMusic. These songs are awesome, just like that little kid breakin' it down.

I only got on the Of Montreal train after Hissing Fauna... leaked a couple years back and it was in my top 5 that year. They definitely own the operatic glam rock scene right now. Their new disc, Skeletal Lamping, is built upon pop sensibilities yet dense and engaging. Apparently these guys have a wild live show too.

Of Montreal - Plastis Wafers

Next up is Ed Banger Mr Oizo, who is dropping his Lambs Anger LP this fall. I don't think it's going to be the next Cross but it has potential to get a party started. I wasn't a fan of his summertime brain annihilator "Bruce Willis is Dead" track but the stuff floating around the past week or two is much more listenable.

Mr Oizo - Jo

This guy Koushik is out of Ontario. He sounds like Caribou, the 1960's and reverb thrown in a blender and chilled. Relaxing soulful stuff full of instruments, samples and singing.

Koushik - Bright and Shining

Radiohead sure does like a competition. While I don't really think that In Rainbows needed the remix treatment, some top notch tracks have come out of the Nude and Reckoner contests. This Reckoner take comes from a dude named Brendan Merrick who has aparently never done this sort of thing before. Yeah right, he kills it. All the emotion of the original is kept in tack but it gets jazzzed up with some snapping noise and funky bass.

Radiohead - Wreckin'Er (Brendan Merrick remix)

Finally, yeah I know, Kanye West. It's pretty common knowledge that one of the most polarizing players in the rap/r&b/whatever game has a new album, 808's and Heartbreak, coming out later in November. Yeezy has slowly been dropping bits of it on something called the internet and now there is a new radio rip of another track, "Coldest Winter". I've never been excited about an r&b album, but I think this one will kill it. Sorry for the quality but imagine what those banging drums will sound like at 320kbps.

Remix Sunday TIFF edition: Vampire Weekend vs Radiohead

I caught my first (and perhaps only) flick at 2008's Toronto International Film Festival Friday night, Belgian director Fabrice Du Welz's disturbing-as-all-fuck Vinyan, about a couple who go venturing into the twisted Burmese jungle in search of their young son who goes missing in the aftermath of the tsunami of 2004.
What does this have to do with Remix Sunday?  Exit music.... for a film, duh.
Vampire Weekend covering Radiohead's OK Computer choice cut.  And holy crap, do they ever.

Festival Season: Lollapalooza Review - Day 1

Well how about that. Despite donning a Robo-Boot to protect my freshly broken foot/sprained ankle combo from an ill-advised (and poorly timed) skateboarding spill last Saturday, my first ever Lollapalooza also doubled as my most musically indulgent 3-day span in my life thus far. So now I'm going to do my best to recap (if not recapture) the diverse, epic, and gloried weekend spent in Grant Park, Chicago.

The Go! Team (2:15pm)

Listening to the Black Lips tear through their 1:15pm set while sweating through my t-shirt on the outside of a festival behind 20,000 other anxious patrons wasn't terribly easy to swallow. But once we did arrive, the Go! Team seemed prepared to cheer my spirits with their impressive energy that was even more so considering the scorching heat. The crowd was pretty substantial considering their relatively early slot and still lengthy line up, and the Team won them over blasting out tunes from both of their albums.

The Go! Team - Grip Like a Vice

The Kills (3:15pm)

Up next were London, UK's the Kills. Admittedly, I'm pretty sure I hadn't heard a single note from this gender-split twosome. It was strictly off the recommendation of a friend (who compared lead Allison "VV" Mosshart to a less attention- seeking Karen O), and the fact that nobody wanted to go see Duffy with me that lured me to the stage for their antics, and thankfully so. Not a great performance, admittedly, as the two seemed about to melt under the rays. But despite the elements, the strength of their songwriting shone through. Definitely one of the more pleasant finds of the festival, and one that might have the potential to truly hook me in a dark nightclub rather than a day fit for a picnic.

the Kills - Hitched

Gogol Bordello (4:15pm)

Though I opted to bask in the sun and stare gazingly at the big main stage screens, I couldn't help but notice that I may have been the only person in the strong crowd not moving a muscle. Instead, with "gypsy punks" Gogol Bordello leading by example, the response from the crowd was certainly notable. These guys build their reputation on a powerful live presence, which they brought 100% to the Lolla experience.

Gogol Bordello - Supertheory of Supereverything

Mates of State (5:15pm)

Of all the bands on the bill Friday afternoon, Mates of State could perhaps be the one most suited for a park on a bright, cloudless summer day; their pleasant synth-pop melodies seem crafted with exactly this environment in mind. Despite their suitability however, the husband and wife duo of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel never really seemed to emote much energy whatsoever, which was in time relayed onto the crowd who approved slightly to their breadth of tunes across their 10 year career, but never legitimately erupted at any point during the set.

Mates of State - The Re-Arranger

Grizzly Bear (5:45pm)

After leaving Mates of State relatively unimpressed, I set up shop at the "accessibility zone" (thank you, wounded paw) for a comfortable spot for Radiohead tourmates Grizzly Bear at the City stage, one of the smaller of the festival. At risk of getting criticized by the indie- masses, I've never given their critically acclaimed Yellow House much of a chance. So checking this set out, I felt very much like an open book ready to absorb "what all the fuss was about". The conclusion: subtle melodies over wistful vocals and enough resonance to make me revisit Yellow House, but still a skepticism and speculation that it might not have enough jump to really have my name on it.

Grizzly Bear - Knife

Bloc Party (6:15pm)

It has taken me well over a year to accept the fact that A Weekend in the City is not Silent Alarm. But in that time span, I've seen the best songs from both albums in a live environment three times, each time leaving me with a slightly more optimistic outlook on their sophomore effort. Now, as they seem primed for their third release, their upcoming single "Mercury", which experiments with loops and samples, seems like a valiant effort to expand and progress rather than stick to their guns - the ones which started as fierce semi automatics before retreating to handgun status. In general, the set was classic Bloc - high energy modern rock n' roll, a charismatic lead donning the t-shirt of a man he cannot vote for given his citizenship (guess who), and a rollicking crowd appreciative throughout.

Bloc Party - Mercury

Radiohead (8:00)

Fucking ruled. But of course we already knew that. My first RH experience was everything I could have hoped for - impeccable song selection (In Rainbows heavy, but with a healthy sprinkling of the highlights of all other albums with the exception of the dated Pablo Honey), impressive but simple effects, and flawless recreations of the impossible sounds which only Thom and Co. can bring to live on record, let alone in the flesh.

Everybody's Nude

A week ago today Radiohead announced a contest with a twist. The challenge? Remix the band's latest single, "Nude", submit it to the remix website and get the most people to vote for it. The cost? $4.95 The prize? Nothing. Well, Radiohead might listen to your remix.

The band made the track's five source elements available for 99 cents each on iTunes last week and almost 1,000 remixes have been submitted to the Nude Remix website since. Currently leading the pack with over 6,000 votes is Holy Fuck's version, but there are tons of other contenders including Amplive's "Nudez" and Night Facilities' sparse and haunting rework.

Remix Sunday: Radiohead Rainydayz Remixes by Amplive

Oakland producer/DJ Amplive has released (for free) his 8 track remix project based on Radiohead's super-duper 2007 album and these tracks are, to this listener's ears, the best In Rainbows remixes created yet.

According to 1776, the website currently distributing Rainydayz Remixes:

"After a cease & desist put the brakes on Amplive's Radiohead In Rainbows remix project, the online music community reasonably wondered if the tracks would ever see the light of day. Well, here they are.

Rainydayz Remixes is composed exclusively of source material pulled from In Rainbows, re-envisioned by Amplive and complimented by vocal work from Too $hort, MC Zumbi of Zion I, Chali2na of Jurassic 5, Codany Holiday, and Del The Funky Homosapien."

Tracklist:
01 Rainydayz
02 Video Tapez (ft. Del The Funky Homosapien)

Vampire Weekend invade London

Ignore the poster above. Vampire Weekend is actually busy in London town; at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen tomorrow night and Push on Saturday. The first show is sold out but I think tickets are still available for the second gig. With the new album to be released worldwide January 28/29, I bet they'll have even more songs up their striped sleeves than when I saw them at the Borderline a few months ago.

According to Hoxton Bar and Kitchen's website:

Fresh off their UK tour with the Shins, their debut album going out in January released on XL Recordings, the best thing out of New York since ... (insert favourite NY band here), hype being raised EVERYwhere! How could you miss this?

Vampire Weekend bring you their unique slice of folk-indie-punk chopped up with some African influenced guitar rhythm and spiky vocals. The songs run round your head for hours until you're learnt every instrumental and vocal part. Frankly, you should buy a ticket right now.

Yes indeedy.

Torontonians can catch 'em at the Horseshoe Tavern on February 11th.

Radiohead Loves The Internet

So not only did they release a full and unreal album on the net for however much you wanted to pay for it but now radiohead has also released a 60 minute DVD quality video of them preforming all the songs off In Rainbows. The video, Scotch Mist, shows the band in the studio rawking the instruments. Let me tell you, it's great to see Johnny helming a guitar again and not some random 1950's synth or Thom belting out the lyrics to Bodysnatchers while hammering away at his 6 string. Anyways, it goes without saying that the video is worth every second of watching or even just let it play in the background as it sounds great as a live set.

Lets All Drink Scotch and play in the mist.

Faust Arp

Somewhat inevitably, some dude has already got his hands on a copy of the lyrics book from Radiohead's upcoming retail version (read: physical album) of In Rainbows and made it available online. Go here for the scans and here for the ensuing discussion.

Not that having the "official" lyrics really helps, as it's all typically cryptic Radiohead fare. Take, for example, 'Faust Arp':

Wakey wakey rise and shine
It's off again on again
Off again on again
Watch me fall like dominoes
In pretty patterns
Fingers in the blackbird pie
I'm tingling tingling tingling
It's what you feel no what you ought to
What you ought to what you ought to
Reasonable and sensible
Dead from the neck up
I guess I'm stuffed
Stuffed
Stuffed
We thought you had it in you
But not
Not
Not
For no real reason

Squeeze the tubes and empty bottles
I take a bow take a bow take a bow
It's what you feel no what you ought to
What you ought to what you ought to
The elephant that's in the room
Is tumbling tumbling tumbling
Plastic bags with nothing in them
Nothing in them
Duplicate and triplicate
Dead from the neck up
I guess I'm stuffed
Stuffed
Stuffed
We thought you had it in you
But not
Not
Not
Exactly where do you get off?
Is enough
Is enough
I love you but enough is enough
Enough of the stuff
There's no real reason

Happy Radiohead Day!

So I'm thinking of lobbying the Government of the World to mark October 10th as a Universal holiday from this point forth. I'm not sure what name I want to give it, however. I'm stuck between "Radiohead Day" or "The Day the Record Industry Died". Perhaps they're synonymous.

As we posted a couple days ago, Radiohead is in the process of revolutionizing the recorded music industry, and today is the day it all comes to be. This also comes one day after the Telegraph reported that both Oasis and Jamiroquai (along with many others) will following RH's lead by releasing their upcoming albums label-free, and free-of-charge to online fans.

Their hotly anticipated new record, In Rainbows, became available for download today. It's PWYC, with all of the revenue going directly to the now label-less band.

The unwritten "suggest retail price" for this piece of digital history is 5 UK pounds, and I believe the maximum one can pay is upward of 200.

The download site has been jam-packed all day long; it took myself hours to even be able to get on to check it out. But already, as I'm less than half way through my first listen, I can tell it was worth the wait (and the donation). I'm not one of those die-harders, but I predict that nobody will be disappointed with this release, even after waiting for 2+ long years.

Reports are circulating that Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood are spending their day drinking latte's in their underwear whilst periodically hitting "refresh" and watching their bank balances inflate exponentially by the second.

Okay, I made that last part up.

Here's a sneak peak at what can be yours with a click of a button, if the price is right (which it is).

Long-awaited Radiohead Album Available October 10

Newsflash: after working on new album In Rainbows for over two and a half years Radiohead have made an announcement on their official Dead Air Space blog this week that the album will be exclusively available as a digital download on Wednesday October 10th. Monday's post read:

Hello everyone.

Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days;

We've called it In Rainbows.

Love from us all.

Jonny

The DRM-free album and/or discbox are available for pre-order from the In Rainbows webpage now. The discbox edition will ship December 3rd and contains the physical album on both CD and two 12" heavyweight vinyl records, artwork, lyric booklets, and a bonus enhanced CD with 8 bonus tracks, digital photos and artwork. Purchasers also have access to the digital download on October 10th.For those unwilling to spend £40 for all the bells and whistles but eager to get their hands on the album before the projected January '08 standard CD release, Radiohead have provided a somewhat controversional process for purchasing the digital download next week. According to Wikipedia:
"The price of download by itself is left up to the buyer. Upon purchase, the buyer is prompted to type their desired price (plus a transaction fee of 45 pence if purchased for more than £0.00)."
Indeed, when going through the pre-order process I was promted to input a price. Click on a question mark button and 'IT'S UP TO YOU' appears on-screen. Click again and you'll be informed 'NO REALLY, IT'S UP TO YOU'. Sweet.

Surprisingly, the album has not yet been leaked (that I know of). However, find below a few In Rainbows tracks revealed at a concert in Amsterdam in August of last year (kudos to blogs are for dogs).
