Remix S-Monday

Just before heading out to check Kid Sister, A-Trak and subsequently, Shaun White of snowboarding fame I came across this dope remix of Sebastien Tellier by A-Trak.

A-Trak pumps up the slow burn feel of Tellier's original while adding some Rasputin-inspired strings and that bass funk he does so well.

Just a quick note for any Vancouver readers that A-Trak, Kid Sister, and Team Canada will all be hitting the stage this weekend at the LG Mountain Festival in West Vancouver. The event will span over 3 days, starting tomorrow and includes a snowboard comp and some snazzy fashion stuff. More importantly are the three previously mentioned heavy hitters that will all be performing on Saturday. And the best part of it all...it's free. Team Canada kick things off at 4:00 pm on Saturday. Contest: Santogold/A-Trak/Lets Go To War - THIS WEDNESDAY

Wednesdays get absolutely no more exciting than this one upcoming.  Neither do contests, for the record.  Read on, young lads and lasses.

Philadelphia's Santogold, arguably the title-holder for most emergent artist of 2008 is coming to the Guvernment for her first headlining show in Toronto.  I first saw her at Osheaga in 2007, and have been spinning her s/t debut album constantly since it hit the streets this past April. 

Alongside Ms Gold (actually Ms White) comes Fool's Gold records founder and Kanye's former DJ A-Trak, and local electro-lites Lets Go to War.

In a very kind gesture from the ladies and gents at Live Nation, we've got 5 (yes 5!) pairs of tickets for this eye-popping lineup.  All you have to do is email us with the subject line "this is one Santo-Golden contest!" for your chance to get one of them.  But since the show is so soon, you best get on it.  Contest closes at noon on Wednesday, aka the day of the show.

But, since I'm sure we'll get a serious response and you basically need to be at this one, I won't take it personally if you were to run out to secure your pair just in case.  Last I heard, there were still a handful left at Rotate This and Ticketmaster.  Your $25 plus charges couldn't possibly be better spent.

Contest: TIME festival ft. SOULWAX, A-Trak, others - August 10th, Toronto

This is a whole new kind of Remix Sunday.

I love to dance. With such an admittance, I'm expecting to be in good company this coming Sunday at Toronto's Sunnyside Pavilion at the first-ever TIME Festival. While the event hours are pretty unconventional for an event of its ilk (it's a daytime-to-evening event, starting at 1pm), the lineup may calm the nerves of anyone worrying if this formula can work.

Belgium's Electro fathers SOULWAX (aka 2 many DJs) head a roster that also includes Fool's Gold man-in-charge A-Trak, UK remixer and DJ Erol Alkan, plus a ton of others with heavy local Toronto and Canadian support: Jokers of the Scene (Ottawa), as well as Torontonians Mario J, Fritz Helder & the Phantoms and Nasty Nav, among others.

Contest: Stag & Dagger, May 15 - London

Thanks to the kind folks at VICE Magazine UK, Bridging the Atlantic has 2 passes to Stag & Dagger to give away to a couple of lucky Londoners. The brand spanking new one day festival takes place in lovely Shoreditch next Thursday, May 15th, from 6pm to midnight and features over 100 acts including SebastiAn, Cadence Weapon, Times New Viking, 1990s, Black Lips, Jay Reatard, A-Trak, Slow Club, The Mae Shi, Diplo, Busy P, Operator Please, Atlas Sound, the debut performance of the new Hot Chip side project Booji Boy High, plus the Ed Banger Records crew. Contest: Fool's Gold Tour (ft: A-Trak, Jokers of the Scene, and others), April 11th

Fool's Gold Records exemplifies exactly how fast music is moving in the internet years. Launched in April of last year by super DJ's A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs, the electro/hip hop/mega party label has already boasted super singles and EPs, thrown killer parties at SXSW and others, and has quickly built a reputation that whatever they touch turns to... well, gold.

To (perhaps inadvertently) mark their 1st anniversary and all the successes that have already come, Fool's Gold is hitting the road with a full roster of beat breakers and party makers. The line-up for the Canadian dates, which includes stops in Montreal, Toronto, and Van-City, boasts a very impressive mix of international and homegrown talent: A-Trak himself, UK club DJ Sinden, Brooklyn mixtape master (and one-half of Certified Bananas) Sammy Bananas, as well as Ottawa heroes Jokers of the Scene and Toronto faves Nacho Lovers, and the promise of surprise special guests.

MSTRKRFT: Doing big things in 2008

The other night I had the chance to help a friend out by covering a MSTRKRFT show and interview. Now, I feel I shouldn't say too much about it as it hasn't been aired yet, but we did get the chance to talk about the ever changing electronic music scene, the art of remixing, and what the guys have in store for the new year. The guys explained that they were going to try to stay away from the remixing for a while to focus on other things. We then asked them if they ever wanted to dabble with any hip-hop remixes, as their tracks to date are almost exclusively indie rock or dance groups. They revealed that they had in fact been recently approached by a hip-hop artist, not really indicating though if this would be a remix or collaborative effort. When we tried to get the name of the artist out of them they kept quiet, but did say that to do something like this, it would have to be someone fairly significant in the game and a means to move them forward as artists. I like to think it's going to be with Kanye with the whole A-trak connection. As for the set itself, I had heard mixed things about their performance, but I was pretty into the show. In between filming I was able to dance to a great remix of 'Genesis' by Justice along with some other unheard goodies. Too bad the girl beside me kept calling me a Unicorn..and other various mythological beasts.
